Police officers granted bail on assault charges

Three suspended police officers have been granted bail by the Suva’s Magistrates Court, after being charged with serious assault of a 16 and 19-year-old in 2020.

The three officers, Eroni Malo Matanikoroca, Elia Raqamu Sioweli, and Moape Tau Tikoilepanoni are charged with one count each of assault causing actual bodily harm and had appeared before Resident-Magistrate Krishnan Prasad, this afternoon.

The charges were read to the three suspended police officers, which they were understood by them.

Matanikoroca, Sioweli, and Tikoilepanoni have all opted for Legal Aid counsels.

The Court has ordered that a $500 non-cash bail bond be placed on them, that they do not re-offend whilst out on bail or interfere with prosecution witnesses, and one surety each.

Magistrate Prasad has ordered the prosecution to present the victim to court, so that the three could reconcile the matter, despite it not being a reconcilable offence.

Full disclosures have been served and the matter has been adjourned to 8 April for mention.
